A popular Spanish tourist destination is being overrun with cruise ships during an “intense” month as the port welcomes thousands in a record-breaking tourism boom.
The Canary Islands are particularly popular with Brits as it’s a place to catch some winter sun.
And one of its most popular islands – Gran Canaria – is bracing itself for a very busy month that will see its main port dock 48 cruise liners in one month, according to reports.
Infopuertos.com reported: “The Port of Las Palmas plans to receive 48 cruise calls until Thursday, November 30.
“Activity at the Santa Catalina dock will be very intense in these weeks, already fully immersed in the tourist cruise season.

“Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will welcome ships practically every day.”
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean.
It is also the capital city of the Canary Islands, jointly with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and the most populated city.
And it’s also a very favourite tourist spot – with Tripadvisor explaining why.

“Cruise ships, yachts, sunbathers, and surfers all congregate in the sheltered bays against a backdrop of colourful resorts.”
The Canary Islands – which includes eight Spanish islands including Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria – are located off the African coast and the most southern region of Spain.
The number of cruise passengers passing through the Canary Islands ports between January and September 2023 exceeded by 86.9% the figures registered in the same period of 2022, with an astonishing 1.5 million passengers on 706 ships.
The ongoing tourism boom for the Canaries is great news for the wider economy according to its government.
“In 2022, the Canary Islands topped the charts in terms of tourism revenue in Spain,” declared Jessica de León, the Minister of Tourism for the Canary Islands Government, during a session at the regional Parliament, reports Canarian Weekly.
She went on to highlight that the outlook for the forthcoming winter season is “very positive,” with nearly 10 million airline seats scheduled to the group of islands by the end of the year.
