Russia has warned it will take “compensatory measures” after the US moved nuclear weapons into Europe in its latest WW3 threat.
Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, issued the threat while speaking at the High-Level International Conference Eurasian Security: Reality and Prospects in a Transforming World.
He said: “Increased strategic risks are created as a result of the forward deployment of American nuclear weapons in a number of European countries and the implementation of so-called ‘joint nuclear missions’.
“This has an extremely destabilizing charge. Against the backdrop of a general increase in threats from NATO, it forces us to resort to compensatory measures.”
Local reports from the Russian state media group RIA said Lavrov’s words were as a result of “Western policies in Europe, the system of confidence-building measures and arms control has been destroyed, which includes the US withdrawal from a number of security treaties”.
As well as backing Russia’s rivals Ukraine in its ongoing war in Europe, Washington has infuriated Moscow via its backing of Israel the Middle East war that is raging.
At a meeting this week, both Russia and the US vetoed each others’ resolutions of the Israel-Hamas war at the UN Security Council.
It sparked reminiscent nods back towards the Cold War, with both claiming the other was acting in bad faith over the vetoes.

Russia’s infuriation with the US was sparked over its backing of Ukraine, supplying the European nation with aid and arms in its battle with Moscow.
More recently, Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke of a Russian drone attack in the west of his country’s Khmelnitskyi region that was likely targeting the area’s nuclear power station.
The president said windows at the plant were destroyed, injuring 20 people.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – the UN’s nuclear watchdog – the blasts did not impact the plant’s operations. However, power was cut from some off-site monitoring stations temporarily.
During his usual evening address, Zelenskyy said: “It is most likely that the target for these drones was the Khmelnitskyi nuclear power station.” he said.
“The shock wave from the explosion shattered windows, including on the nuclear power station’s premises.”
He added that every Russian attack “especially those daring enough to target nuclear power stations and other critical facilities, serves as an argument that pressure on the terrorist state is insufficient”.
Tensions erupted again last week after Russian president Vladimir Putin said the US was risking submerging the war into darker depths after it provided Kyiv with missiles.
