One police district has the highest crime rate in the country – and one unfortunate area in it has been slammed as a terrible place to move to by people claiming to know the area.
Within Cleveland, Middlesborough has the highest city crime rate with 187 crimes per 1,000 in 2022 with the most common type criminal damage and arson.
This makes it on average the second most dangerous city in the country. All this helps make Cleveland Police, which has a crime rate of 143.4 per 1,000 within its jurisdiction, one of the busiest forces in the country.

Anecdotal evidence from online forums appears to back up the data that the Cleveland area has some big challenges and one town in it, which is directly connected to Middlesborough, has copped a lot of flack in particular. Writing on Mumsnet in 2021 in response to a question about whether Middleborough and Southbank are a good area to move to, one person said: “There are many, many reasonably priced areas in the North East, Middlesbrough would be well down the list of best locations”.
Another added: “Southbank is horrific. It's one of the only areas where people refuse to move into council houses in the area. There is nothing in the surrounding areas, a high proportion of unemployment, crime, anti-social behaviour, gangs, mainly white people… the sort of place they won't take kindly to outsiders visit and have a good walk around before you buy anything including at night time but be careful it is genuinely dangerous.”
A third added: “You don't want to live in South Bank, the houses are stupidly cheap there for a reason I'm afraid.”
A fourth chimed in “There are bits of Middlesbrough, and the surrounding areas, that are nice. South Bank isn't one of them.”
Speaking about the crime rate in Cleveland in January, Superintendent John Wrintmore for Stockton district told TeesideLive: "We know Cleveland Police has the highest level of crime across the UK. That is a particular challenge. We do need to get ahead of the curve upstream to turn the tap of demand off a little bit and some of that is around problem-solving and making some solutions to long-term issues."
