A huge storm is set to sweep through parts of the UK today (Sunday, December 17).
The Met Office has issued an updated amber warning for rain to residents in north-west Scotland and say conditions could pose a “danger to life” there. The warning is in place until 6pm.
Fort William and Ullapool are among the places covered by the amber warning. Surrounding areas near Inverness, Tobermory and Portree are under a yellow warning with rainfall also expected there.

Met Office says for areas under the amber warning: "Persistent, heavy rain is likely to cause significant travel disruption and flooding." People have been told:
- There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
- Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life
- Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
- Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
- A good chance some communities will be cut off by blocked roads
Another yellow warning – this time for wind – has been issued in the north and northeast of England. It is in place until 6pm today and covers towns such as Middlesbrough, Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle.
Winds there could reach up to 65mph, the Met Office says. The national weather agency warns:
- Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
- Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
- Some short term loss of power and other services is possible, including damage from tree debris
- Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
