The commander of the Russian Black Sea fleet was killed as a result of the attack launched by Ukraine on the navy’s headquarters last week, the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces has claimed.
On Friday, the Ukrainian military attacked with Storm Shadow missiles – provided by France and the UK – the Russian Black Sea fleet’s headquarters in occupied Sevastopol.
In the immediate aftermath of the air strike, Russia’s Defence Ministry said one serviceman had gone missing, revising its earlier statement that the man had been killed.
Moscow did not share the name of the military man affected by the attack.
But Ukraine has now claimed Admiral Viktor Sokolov died aged 61 as a result of the air strike.
The official had been handpicked by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
