Jihadist attack on Spain thwarted as radicalised teenagers arrested

The National Police of Spain successfully thwarted a potential jihadist attack by arresting three highly radicalised teenagers in coordinated operations in Madrid and Barcelona. The individuals, minors who had actively expressed their intent to carry out a terrorist action, were taken into custody this Monday.

The arrests, conducted by the General Directorate of the Police, were prompted by an extensive operation initiated by the General Information Police in collaboration with the juvenile section of the National Court Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation began with a cyber patrol on social networks, where law enforcement agents identified several profiles espousing jihadist ideologies.

These profiles were traced back to three young students who were found to be deeply radicalised, aligning their beliefs with the extremist doctrines advocated by Daesh.

Their online presence revealed an alarming endorsement of violence in the name of Islam, admiration for known terrorist figures, and the identification of potential targets for attacks.

The teenagers went further, expressing a clear intention to carry out a terrorist action against those they considered “apostates” โ€“ individuals who did not share their radical beliefs. The trio had meticulously planned their potential attack, assigning roles and responsibilities, including the manufacture of explosives. Disturbingly, the arrested individuals had obtained manuals for creating explosive devices, including one for TATP, known as the “mother of Satan.”

Responding swiftly to the imminent threat, law enforcement agents apprehended the three minors, preventing any potential harm they might have caused.

At the same time, three raids were conducted, yielding a significant haul of electronic devices and documents that are currently under thorough analysis.

The gravity of the situation prompted the head of the Central Juvenile Court of the National High Court to order the placement of the arrested individuals in a closed detention centre on Tuesday.

The operation, which involved the collaboration of provincial intelligence brigades in Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona, reflects the ongoing efforts of Spanish authorities to combat terrorism and safeguard national security.
