Footage shows buildings reduced to rubble in Gaza
Explosions have been heard in Gaza as the week-long Israel-Hamas truce was broken. Minutes before the ceasefire was to end, Israel accused Hamas of firing rockets.
The Israeli military has responded declaring they had “resumed combat against the Hamas terrorist organisation in the Gaza Strip”. The week-long lull in fighting was due to end at 7am local time – 5am UK time.
Then, shortly after the Israeli military announced the end of the ceasefire, strikes began. According to Israel “Hamas violated the operational pause, and in addition, fired toward Israeli territory”.
The resumption of fighting has dashed any hopes of the ceasefire being once again extended, after an initial four day stretch was lengthened to seven. With 105 hostages freed, the fragile deal also saw 240 Palestinian prisoners released.
