Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a car and a bus had been involved in the collision, but that nobody had become trapped in either of the vehicles.
"The bus had also collided with a tree branch causing extensive damage to the roof," it said. "Nobody was trapped in either vehicle and firefighters worked alongside partners to make the scene safe by 9am."
Essex Police advised drivers to avoid Clatterbury Lane, where the collision took place, and the surrounding area.
A spokesperson said: "At the scene officers found a bus and a car had collided. We have closed the road while we and emergency service colleagues from the fire and ambulance services carry out their work at the scene.
"Drivers are advised to check before they travel and plan accordingly if their journey is affected."

It is understood the bus was taking children to Joyce Frankland Academy in Newport and Saffron Walden County High School when the collision took place.
Joyce Frankland Academy issued a statement to parents, stating: "While the full details are being investigated, we are aware that the bus roof was damaged as it struck a tree branch. We know the police and ambulance services are managing the situation to assess everyone involved, and thankfully our current understanding is that no serious injuries have been caused.
"While most students appear to be OK, we know that this could have been a traumatic experience. Therefore we have made arrangements in school to provide a space for anyone who may be in shock or upset by the events.
"Thank you to all students and parents for the calm manner in which they helped to handle the situation."
