A drug cartel boss dubbed 'Commander Fatso' had his eyes ripped from his head by members of a rival gang. He was later murdered, dismembered and disposed of.

Gruesome images emerged on social media this week showing Comandante Gordo (as he is known in Spanish) topless and sitting on the ground with his hands tied behind his back. His face and neck are covered in blood, and there are just empty sockets where his eyes once were.

According to Borderland Beat, information online suggests he is a leading member of the Sinaloa Cartel in the town of San Pedro Piedra Gorda, in the Mexican state of Zacatecas.

He is said to be a member of the Sinaloa Cartel faction controlled by Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, rather than the faction controlled by the sons of infamous drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán.

Gordo is believed to have run into rival hitmen from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) close to the town of Valparaiso. The CJNG captured him before taking his eyes out.

Another image emerged showing Gordo still alive. In it he appears cleaned up and sat on a stool while locked up in handcuffs. His eye sockets are swollen shut.

However, Borderland Beat reports he was transported to the neighbouring state of Jalisco soon after the photos were taken. There he was killed, dismembered and disposed of near the town of Huejuquilla.

Zacatecas is just one state where Mexico's two biggest drug trafficking organisations – the CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel – continue to war for control of lucrative trafficking routes.
