Brit stabbed by Russian drinking partner who refused to believe he was not a spy

A British lawyer accused of spying has been put in a Moscow hospital after reportedly being stabbed by his Russian drinking buddy.

The man, a British passport holder reported by Mash to be called Charles Bowen, received stab wounds to his face, head and chest. His identity is yet to be confirmed by authorities.

The 41-year-old is reported to have been attacked by his 37-year-old drinking buddy, named by the Russian online media outlet as Ilya Khasyanov. The pair are understood to have met in the lobby of an apartment building in the Kuskovskaya Street area in the east of Moscow with the Russian man understood to have been drunk at the time.

The Russian outlet reports that he invited the Brit up for a drink “out of kindness”, however this remains unconfirmed. The news comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between the UK and Russia as the war in Ukraine simmers and violence continues to escalate in Gaza.

The site wrote: “And out of the kindness of his heart, he invited him to visit and persuade[d] him to share a bottle of Russian vodka. Due to the language barrier… the men started talking on their fingers. Ilya began asking Charlie if he was a spy. The Briton said that he was an ordinary lawyer from VISTA Foreign Business Support.”

Khasyanov is reported to have not believed the claims from Charles and reportedly set upon him with a knife.

The outlet continued: “Result – Charles was wounded in the head, face and chest. And the capital’s Investigative Committee opened a case of attempted murder against the brawler.”
