Indonesia has been named the world’s most generous country for the sixth year in a row in the latest World Giving Index.
The southeast Asian country topped the ranking in the latest CAF generosity table with over 80 percent of its residents saying they donated money last year.
More than 60 percent of Indonesians said they volunteered their time over the last year, earning the country its place at the top of the table.
Ukraine took second place on the list while Kenya, Liberia and the USA rounded off the top five.
Indonesia’s generosity is thought to stem from its culture of ‘gotong royong’ or ‘mutual assistance’. Gotong royong is founded in the belief that an individual has obligations towards wider society.

People who are religious are also generally more likely to give with CAF’s research finding that those who say religion is important in their daily life value generosity more.
In 2022, 87 percent of Indonesians identified as Muslim. One of the five pillars of Islam, zakat requires Muslims to donate a certain portion of their wealth to charitable causes each year.
The UK was in 17th place overall with 71 percent of British people saying they’d donated money over the last year.

More than a quarter of Brits volunteered over the last year while over half of people said they’d helped a stranger. Although the UK is one of the most generous countries in the world, it’s slipped down the ranking over the last decade.
Neil Heslop, chief executive of the Charities Aid Foundation, said: “The World Giving Index shows a mixed picture for the UK. We are one of the most generous countries in the world for giving money, even when times are tough, but overall we have slipped down the Index over the last decade.
“That’s why we are calling for a renewed culture of giving in the UK to bring us all together and get time and money flowing to support hard-pressed charities and communities around the country.”
