Looking for a city break staycation? One of the UK’s top destinations is a walkable city packed with attractions and historical landmarks.
According to research from Workthere, Edinburgh is one of the UK’s most pedestrian-friendly cities with one in six workers commuting to work on foot.
On average, Edinburgh’s residents are just 308m from the nearest green space and the city has much better air quality than London. It’s also a great destination to explore by bike, with over 2,000 cycle routes to try in the Scottish capital.
Buy a digital Railcard online with Trainline and store it directly in the Trainline app, so you can use it right away to get 1/3 off eligible journeys for a whole year.
If you are planning a visit to the Scottish capital but aren’t sure of the best route to take in as many sights as possible, there are a number of organised walking tours run by experts and locals.
With Viator, you can book a historic walking tour for as little as £14, or if you’re after something spooky for the Halloween season, there’s an underground ghost walking tour from £17.
Alternatively, Tripadvisor can help you book one of the top-rated walks, scored by previous visitors. One of the top-rated walking tours, with 93 percent of travellers recommending it, is the Edinburgh underground walking tour, which shares a historic look at the passages which weave beneath the city. The tour can be booked for £20 per adult.
Or, if you’d prefer to explore the city by bike, there are a number of guided bike tours too. One of the top-rated bike tours, based on reviews from other travellers, is Ricky’s Ultimate City Bike Tour. The tour vows to help cyclists beat the crowds of Edinburgh’s city centre and discover off-the-beaten-path locations and secret spots.
You can book a Ricky’s Ultimate City Bike tour from £63 per person.
If you do want to take your walking tour into your own hands, Edinburgh’s Old Town is one of the city’s best areas to explore on foot, with cute shops and cafes around every corner.
A tourist named ‘Annabelle’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “It’s a must-see. This part of Edinburgh was incredible. It became one of my favourite cities!”
‘Caroline2’ wrote: “Well preserved old town, there are so many interesting buildings and churches to discover. Despite the number of tourists, the old town is quite clean and safe to walk around.”
Although the city’s old town is very pedestrian friendly, tourists will have to prepare themselves for hills as many of the streets are on an incline.

Princes Street Gardens are easy to access from the city’s old town and are a wonderful place to admire Edinburgh Castle from.
