Lexus and Toyota have come out on top of the WhatCar?’s new 2023 Reliability Survey in a boost for owners while British brands Vauxhall and Land Rover were among the worst.
However, it was Seat’s Cupra brand which was listed at the bottom followed by Italian marque Alfa Romeo.
The analysis was carried out by WhatCar? after speaking to a staggering 21,8732 car owners across the UK.
Those approached in the survey were asked if their vehicle had suffered any faults over the past four months with cars then handed an average score.
WhatCar? claims there has been a “slight improvement “ in reliability over the past six years. The percentage of cars aged up to five years old suffering issues has dropped 27 percent in 2018 to just 21 percent today.

Most reliable cars
Lexus and Toyota were miles ahead of the opposition across the board with both brands posting almost perfect scores.
Eight models – five from Lexus and three from Toyota – were in the top three places of WhatCar?’s 12 different categories.
Overall, Lexus was the most reliable brand with a score of 98.3 percent, followed by Toyota on 97.4 percent and Mini with 97.2 percent.
However, cars produced by BMW and Ford were found to be the most reliable on the market. The BMW 1 Series and Ford Mustang Mach-E both achieved a 100 percent reliability rating.
Speaking on the Mach-E, WhatCar? Said: “Our data reveals that the all-electric Mustang Mach-E is a great bet if you want a dependable electric SUV. It scored a perfect 100 percent for reliability in our survey because not a single owner told us their car had gone wrong during the first two years of ownership.”
Lexus’ NX was third with a 99.8 percent reliability rating followed by the Suzuki Swift (99.5 percent).

Least reliable
Seat’s Cupra offshoot was found to be the least reliable car with a reliability score of just 82.4 percent.
WhatCar? explained: “Cupra fared the worst – it’s at the bottom of our brand chart, because although we didn’t have big enough sample sizes to report on many of its models, their combined performance was very poor.
“That was not helped by the fact that 69 percent of Cupra Formentor models were out of action for more than a week while being fixed.”
Alfa Romeo was the second lowest manufacturer with a rating of just 85.6 percent, followed by Vauxhall (86.9 percent).
Jaguar was found to be the fourth lowest brand with a score of 87.4 percent followed by Land Rover on 87.6 percent.
The Porsche Taycan was found to be the least reliable electric car with a rating of just 66.5 percent. Meanwhile, the Vauxhall Mokka was the worst-rated electric SUV with a reliability score of 60.6 percent.
