The online vehicle marketplace Auto Trader has revealed the most fuel-efficient cars on sale today.
As the price of petrol and diesel cars continues to increase, many drivers are focusing more on the fuel efficiency of their latest model.
A spokesperson for Auto Trader warned drivers who are planning on buying a new car to understand the benefits of petrol and diesel models.
They said: “Petrol cars are much more efficient than they used to be because carmakers have turned to turbochargers and electric-hybrid systems to improve both performance and miles-per-gallon, especially in smaller engines.
“Petrol cars are more suited than diesel for those who generally do shorter trips, basically because diesel engines need longer, faster runs to make sure the filters used to reduce their emissions operate properly.”

According to Auto Trader, the most economical petrol-powered car currently on sale is the Mazda 2 1.5 Hybrid.
Full hybrids such as the Mazda do not need to be plugged in, however can be briefly ran as an electric vehicle at low speeds.
As a result, according to the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) test cycle, the Mazda 2 can return 74.3mpg.
Most fuel-efficient petrol cars:
- Mazda 2 1.5 Hybrid – 74.3mpg
- Toyota Corolla Icon Hybrid – 64.1mpg
- Renault Clio E-Tech Hybrid – 62.8mpg
- Suzuki Swift SZ-L – 59.7mpg
- Kia Picanto 1.0 DPi – 58.9mpg

Auto Trader also noted that, whilst the cost of diesel is higher than petrol, many of the models return more miles per gallon.
The most fuel-efficient diesel model on sale in the UK is the BMW 116d SE, which can travel 61.4 miles per gallon of fuel.
However, plug-in hybrid models, which can be driven on petrol and electricity, return the best figures, with the Peugeot 308 PHEV able to cover 213.7mpg.
Auto Trader’s spokesperson added that, whilst plug-in hybrids are generally the most efficient models on sale, motorists must consider how the cars perform under their typical driving conditions.
They added: “Plug-in hybrids trounce all else when it comes to claimed MPG figures. That’s because they can run on electric power alone for a time – usually 30 to 40 miles – which means they perform exceptionally well in the lab-based WLTP fuel efficiency test.
“It is technically possible to match the claims in real life, if you do short journeys most of the time and plug the car in regularly, but you should consider the numbers carefully.”
