Although endlessly popular with Brits, Benidorm’s reputation is a bit on the tacky side. That’s why the smaller seaside town of Moraira – which is just 25 miles from the tourist mecca – is perhaps all the more surprising.

The upmarket town is located next to the village of El Portet and both communities form a tourist resort on the Costa Blanca strip – boasting 8km of coastline backed by stunning mountains and vineyards.

Website European Best Destinations explains more about the location calling is “dream” resort.

It said: “Moraira is typically the kind of small seaside resorts one dreams of for a holiday in Spain.

“Far from the crowds, from soulless buildings, this family seaside resort right on the water is what you need for a relaxing holiday under the sun of the Spanish coast.

It adds that Moraira is “one of the best hidden gems in Europe”.

Travel blogger Ella who runs website Many More Maps agreed.

She said: “I spent three months living on the Costa Blanca, so I got to explore a tonne of this cool area of Spain. Of everywhere I visited during that time, Moraira was one of my very favourite destinations!”

She added: “Previously a small fishing town, Moraira has preserved its small-town charm – you won’t find tall buildings or hotels obscuring the landscape here.

In addition it has a popular little market where visitors get the chance to experience more traditional Spanish offerings.
