    A major incident has been declared as several schools are put on lockdown after reports of a "serious assault" on Moy Road, Aberfan, South Wales.<\/p>\n

    Members of the public are advised to stay away from the area as armed forces attend a reported stabbing which took place near to a school in the area. <\/p>\n

    A spokesperson for South Wales police confirmed attendance at the incident which occurred just after 9.10am this morning. They urged the public to stay away from the area so they could "effectively deal with this incident."<\/p>\n

    Their statement read: "Emergency services are responding to [a] serious assault that took place on Moy Road, Aberfan, Merthyr just before 9.10am this morning. <\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    "Armed officers are in the area, and we request that people avoid the area so that we can effectively deal with this incident." A school in the area, Greenfield School, has confirmed students are being kept indoors as the incident continues.<\/p>\n

    A statement from head teacher Rhiannon S. Davies read: "We are aware of an ongoing police incident in Aberfan. We just wanted to reassure you that as a precaution we are keeping the pupils safe inside the building, and all perimeter gates are locked."<\/p>\n

    It is understood the schools and childcare centres are not connected to the assault. Another school in the vicinity, Trinity Childcare, released a statement which read: "We are currently in lockdown as a precaution due to an incident within the community. All staff and children are safe."<\/p>\n

    A Member of the Senedd for Merthyr Tydfil, Dawn Bowden wrote on social media: "I am aware of a serious incident in Aberfan this morning. I have spoken to the Police and will await further information from them. However, please take advice given by the Police who will be grateful for your co-operation while this incident is dealt with. Thank you."<\/p>\n

    A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "<\/i>We were called today (05 Dec), at approximately 9:10am, to reports of an incident in Aberfan, Merthyr Tydfil. <\/p>\n

    "We sent one emergency ambulance, one air ambulance and one Cymru High Acuity Response unit to the scene where advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service. We conveyed one patient by road to University Hospital Of Wales, Cardiff for further treatment."<\/p>\n

    Local MP Gerald Jones, said: "I have spoken to police regarding a serious incident in Aberfan this morning. You may see an increased police presence in the area and I\u2019d encourage everyone to co-operate with police officers as they deal with the incident."<\/p>\n
