A road in Bolivia has been dubbed “The Death Road” after claiming numerous lives as the most dangerous cycle route in the world. The North Yungas Road set 15,400 feet in the air attracts numerous thrill seekers looking to complete one of the most dangerous cycle routes.

It is known for claiming the lives of over 18 cyclists each year, as well as hundreds of lives from car accidents on the windy roads.

Nicknamed “El Camino de la Muerte” (The Death Road) by locals, it is a 40-mile journey from the summit that brings in 25,000 mountain bikers annually.

While the views are stunning on a clear day, the stone and wooden crosses that line the road serve as a stark reminder of just how dangerous the journey can be.

The road looks over the beautiful rainforest of the Yungas, with greenery in all directions.

But with the narrow roads so close to the cliff-edge, it sees numerous accidents each year.

The route has become an extreme sport for some, with the drop reaching 11,800 feet. As cyclists speed down the hill, it can be hard to get their speed under control.

The road is also uneven, with loose stones making the ride even more hazardous.

A new road opened in 2006 to allow motorists to avoid the dangerous zone, but some still opt for the more dangerous route.

Gravity Bolivia is one of the cycling tour companies that offer riders the opportunity to experience the once in a lifetime trip through the clouds and waterfalls.

Derren Patterson, the 28-year-old manager of Gravity Bolivia, told Cyling Today: “There have been a number of deaths on this road, which is why it is very important that people ride with a competent outfitter.

“We go down single file keeping plenty of distance between riders, with a guide in the front and a guide in the back at all times. The first 20km of the ride is on tarmac, which is a great opportunity to get a feel for your bike, as well as taking in the amazing views of the Andes Mountains as they slowly become greener.”
