Inca Maiden: Expert on discovery of mummy that felt ‘so alive’

South America is filled with ancient spaces, a land of stories, mythology, and countless lost civilisations.

Many of the ancient people who once called the continent home lived in and around the great Andes mountain range.

Stretching along South America’s western side, the Andes are one the world’s largest mountain ranges and span a whopping seven countries.

Peru, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Venezuela all have at least a part of their land on the gargantuan natural ridge, many of these countries once having housed a lost civilisation known as the Inca.

And it is the Inca who, growing out of the Peruvian highlands in the early 13th century, are among the most studied peoples — and for good reason.

Traces of the Inca in the mountains have largely disappeared, but a team of researchers previously hoping to find at least some evidence got more than they bargained for.

Climbing Argentina’s portion of the Andes before scaling the world’s tallest active volcano, the team, led by Dr Johan Reinhard, came across the almost perfectly preserved remains of a 13-year-old girl.

Initially fearing that the girl had frozen in the preceding weeks or months, the tell-tale signs that this wasn’t any old body quickly made itself clear.

She was tightly wrapped in a blanket traditionally associated with the Inca and was accompanied by a girl and a boy around four and five years old.

When the remains were taken away for analysis, the results showed that the group were some 500 years old, placing them in history as part of the Inca.
