Politics Live: Andrew Marr on ‘Suella Braverman sacking’

Andrew Marr has hinted how Suella Braverman could already be plotting her ultimate revenge against Rishi Sunak.

Speaking on the BBC’s Politics Live this morning, the journalist said the decision to sack Ms Braverman was a “massive gamble” by the Prime Minister.

Following her exit, Mr Marr said the right of the Conservative Party “is meeting this afternoon in Parliament to discuss their reaction” to her firing.

He added that “part of the agenda is whether there should be a Suella Braverman leadership campaign”.

In the days building up to Mr Sunak’s reshuffle, there had been questions over whether Ms Braverman was trying to get fired so she could become the leader of the Conservative Party.

Mr Marr commented that Ms Braverman’s sacking had not gone down well with some members of the British public.

He told the panel there had been a “slew of calls” to Nick Ferrari’s LBC show from people who were “furious” and claimed Ms Braverman’s resignation was a “victory of the woke brigade”.

Mr Marr also said that because of Mr Sunak’s reshuffle, more people would be thinking of voting for the Reform Party rather than the Conservatives.

On David Cameron’s appointment as Foreign Secretary, Mr Marr said it was part of Mr Sunak trying to move his personality close to the centre.

He explained: “It is a choice that the prime minister has now made. He wants to nudge his personality towards the centre-right rather than the right-right. The David Cameron appointment is not without risk either.”

This morning, the former Prime Minister was appointed to the position of Foreign Secretary following James Cleverly’s move to the Home Office.

While Mr Cameron is not an elected MP, he can serve on the Cabinet because he has been made a life peer in the House of Lords.

In a statement, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “His Majesty has also been pleased to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom for life upon David Cameron.”
