British boffins are set to be the first in the world to help us live to 120, academics say.<\/p>\n
The UK is the frontrunner in age research and will beat the US with \u201ceternal youth\u201d medical techniques, it is claimed. But scientists are calling on the Government and billionaires to fund studies to ensure our cells stay healthy.<\/p>\n
Prof Lorna Harries, of Exeter University, said: \u201cWhile we\u2019re a scientific powerhouse we need to develop our ability to turn our findings into things that are tangible outcomes in the real world.\u201d Meanwhile, Prof Lynne Cox, of Oxford University, said: \u201cPotentially, you could live to 120 if you did all the right things and had the right genes.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes after reports that human life expectancy has more than doubled since 1900. And it is expected to continue to increase as time goes on.<\/p>\n
Reports from earlier this year claimed that the number of people reaching the age of 100 or older has drastically increased, according to Trusted Source. They claim that there were 450,000 centurions in 2015 globally.<\/p>\n
By 2050, it is estimated that that figure will increase to approximately 3.7 million people. Led by researchers from Tufts Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine, a new study is helping to answer this question by finding that centenarians possess a unique immune cell composition and activity, giving them a highly functional immune system and allowing them to live longer.<\/p>\n
