Italy’s capital has been overrun by swarms of giant Asian hornets that carry a painful sting capable of leaving a full-grown man\u00a0 in agony “unable to walk”.<\/p>\n
Rome is experiencing an explosion the aggressive hornets with giant nests cropping up across the city.<\/p>\n
Heat and discarded rubbish have been blamed for the infestation with experts warning the factors have combined to turn Rome into a perfect breeding ground.<\/p>\n
One Roman resident was reportedly left needing crushes after being strung on the foot by one of the hornets.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Italian zoologist\u00a0Andrea Lunerti has noted the hornets appear to be “bigger and more frightening”.<\/p>\n
Read More <\/strong> Full list of UK bed bug hotspots as Brits report surge in infestations<\/strong><\/p>\n Ms Lunerti told the Guardian: “This year we have seen more Queen oriental hornets, who are mating with males perhaps from other colonies.<\/p>\n “The Queens are much bigger and more frightening \u2013 they do not have the traditional dimensions of other wasps flying around the city.”<\/p>\n Campi de\u2019 Fiori resident Andrea Velardi was left in agony when a sting from a hornet caused his foot to swell up so bad he was left “unable to walk.”<\/p>\n Mr Velardi recalled releasing immediately the sting was from no ordinary hornet or wasp.\u00a0<\/p>\n Don’t miss… <\/strong> He said: “We don\u2019t yet understand the damage these insects can do, but I knew I had to act quickly,<\/p>\n “This summer definitely marked a turning point.”<\/p>\n “Other than the nests, the hornets are continuously invading open spaces like terraces and terrifying people, especially if there\u2019s food.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s impossible to enjoy having a snack on a terrace nowadays.”<\/p>\n
