Russia’s attack on the Avdiivka area appeared spent earlier this week, when war commentators and Ukrainian officials noted the clashes had fizzled out.

But the prestigious US think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted on October 20 a “renewed offensive push” near the key Ukrainian city on the eastern frontline.

This fresh wave of attack, the ISW said in its latest assessment of the conflict, suggests “the Russian military command remains committed to offensive operations in the area despite heavy materiel and personnel losses”.

Moscow’s troops are believed to have marginally advanced against Ukraine in their latest push.

Russian military bloggers and a Ukrainian military observer even claimed Moscow captured a stronghold near the waste heap just northeast of Avdiivka, the ISW reported.
