A beach in Northumberland has been named one of the best in winter thanks to its rolling sand dunes and historic landmarks.

Embleton Bay is a popular spot for paddling, with long stretches of golden sand overlooking the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle.

It is located just minutes from the medieval village of Embleton which lies in a section of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This hidden gem is so popular with locals and visitors that it was voted the best beach in the UK in 2017 by BBC’s Countryfile Magazine readers.

Wildlife is in abundance here with dunes including species such as bloody cranesbill, eye bright, bedstraw, potentilla, spring squill, wild thyme and wild vetch.
