Nigel Farage has clashed with the former Tory Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi over the MP’s thoughts about the European Convention on Human Rights.

Talking to Farage at the Tory Party conference, Zahawi outlined his moderate position on the ECHR, saying the ECHR needs to be reformed from within.

The former Brexit Party and UKIP leader blasted his approach to the convention as the same as Labours.

It comes after Michael Fabricant yesterday called for Britain to leave the ECHR, saying Britain doesn’t need to learn from the French and Germany who “did awful things in World War Two”.

Don’t miss…

The ECHR is disliked by many conservatives as European Judges continue to block the Government from sending illegal migrants to Rwanda.

When the Government first proposed the scheme to send migrants to the African country, it was made to delay all flights until the legality had been determined by UK courts. The Supreme Court is expected to hold a three-day hearing next week, with a ruling in November.

Zahawi told Farage on GBNews: “I would much rather see us reform.

“This is a problem for pretty much every major economy in the world.

“We’re in a world now of mass migration, mass movement of humanity. It’s a problem for all of us. Why is it we can reform our own legislation to modernise it, but we can’t touch this?”

Farage hit out at the former Conservative Party Chairman, saying “That’s exactly what Labour will say next week”.

He added that “great political leaders” have “stand out messages” and that “no one believes” Rishi is going to reform the ECHR from within.

But Zahawi said he expects the Prime Minister to halt illegal Channel Crossings, whether or not the country is within the ECHR.

“He will stop the boats, I am confident of that. He will make sure the economy grows.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you.
