A sickening mother who decapitated her five-year-old son says she wanted "her boy to be with her forever" in a chilling admission.

Hanaa Mohamed Hassan, 29, hacked her son to death with a machete before eating his head. Hassan has since been declared criminally insane by an Egyptian court.

Judges at the Criminal Court of Zagazig ruled she was not fit to plead on the case of her son Youssef's chilling murder. A verdict was reached on September 30, with Hassan to be held in a psychiatric unit.

Hassan was deemed to have killed her son in "a state of madness" as police recall the mum's horrifying words after butchering the youngster and boiling his head in a stew. She allegedly confessed to eating part of her son's head as a way of having him "stay with her forever".

The stomach-turning murder saw Hassan take the dead body of her son and shove parts of the flesh into boiling water, which she kept on a stovetop before eating. Prosecutors had argued the murder was carried out as a way of avoiding a custody battle.

She and her unnamed ex-husband had been fighting for the custody of Youssef, who was sadly murdered at the hands of Hassan, who has since been detained at a mental hospital.

Initial psychiatric reports indicated Hassan had been responsible and her actions premeditated, though a court has since ordered a detailed assessment. It is there they found Hassan was "delusional" at the time of the killing.

Hassan had chopped her son in the head with the machete three times in the bathroom, before stewing his head and chopping the rest of his body into smaller pieces. She did so to attempt to destroy the evidence, the court has heard.

Further psychological reports were carried out under court order, and a panel has since deemed the murderer was not mentally well. Hassan had allegedly believed her relatives were using sorcery against her, prompting the savage slaughter of her son.

The 29-year-old had also suffered from impaired insight and judgement, and has since been detained at the Abbasia Mental and Neurological Health Hospital in Cairo.
