{"id":119368,"date":"2023-09-25T23:29:51","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T23:29:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cottontailsonline.com\/?p=119368"},"modified":"2023-09-25T23:29:51","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T23:29:51","slug":"denver-post-wins-29-awards-general-excellence-at-colorado-press-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cottontailsonline.com\/world-news\/denver-post-wins-29-awards-general-excellence-at-colorado-press-association\/","title":{"rendered":"Denver Post wins 29 awards, General Excellence at Colorado Press Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Colorado Press Association honored the staff of The Denver Post with 29 awards &#8212; including 18 first-place prizes &#8212; over the weekend, and awarded the newspaper three coveted sweepstakes wins in the General Excellence, Editorial, and Photo and Design Categories.<\/p>\n<p>The sweepstakes prizes are awarded based on a news organization&#8217;s overall performance in its class, which is determined by the number of original stories published each month.<\/p>\n<p>The Post won first-place awards across the newsroom, with the staff&#8217;s &#8220;The Big Payout&#8221; series &#8212; a multi-part investigation into Colorado&#8217;s federal pandemic aid &#8212; taking the top prize in the Best Public Service Project and Best Data Journalism Reporting categories, as well as second place in the Best Investigative Story Package category.<\/p>\n<p>The judges considered journalism published in Colorado between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The Post&#8217;s other first-place awards included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Best Arts &amp; Entertainment Column Writing:<\/strong> Ray Rinaldi for a selection of his work<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Business News\/Feature Story:<\/strong> Elizabeth Hernandez for &#8220;The ins, outs and ughs of first-time homebuying in Denver&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Feature Story:<\/strong> Elise Schmelzer for &#8220;How the growing fentanyl crisis in Colorado has scarred a student, a mother, a daughter, a friend&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Headline Writing:<\/strong> Elizabeth Hernandez for &#8220;Santa Claus shortage: Colorado\u2019s St. Nick demand is outweighing ho-ho-holiday supply&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Humorous Column Writing:<\/strong> John Wenzel for a selection of his work<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Investigative Story Package:<\/strong> Kyle Newman for &#8220;Troy Pachner says \u201corchestrated parent campaign\u201d led to resignation from Arapahoe basketball&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best News Story:<\/strong> Conrad Swanson for &#8220;Colorado, Utah tribe worries nation\u2019s last uranium mill is contaminating water, causing uptick in illness&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Opinion Writing:<\/strong> Megan Schrader for a selection of her work on behalf of the Denver Post Editorial Board<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Politics Reporting:<\/strong> Conrad Swanson for &#8220;Lauren Boebert is part of a dangerous religious movement that threatens democracy, experts say&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Series or Sustained Coverage:<\/strong> Shelly Bradbury for her three-part series on the Twelve Tribes religious cult<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Sports Column Writing:<\/strong> Sean Keeler for a selection of his work<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Cover Design:<\/strong> Derek Robbins for &#8220;The Lives Lost&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best Feature Photograph:<\/strong> Helen H.
