Lucy Letby is set for a retrial after being convicted of murdering seven babies

Letby will face a retrial on one outstanding charge of attempting to murder a baby at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Earlier this year Letby became only the fourth woman ever to be handed a whole life order after Myra Hindley, Rose West and Joanna Dennehy. Her conviction made her the most prolific serial killer of children in modern British history.

She was found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016.

The jury failed to reach verdicts on six other counts of attempted murder relating to five babies.

Today (Monday, September 25) Letby appeared in court via videolink to hear that she will be retried on one outstanding charge of attempted murder relating to baby girl Child K. Manchester Crown Court heard the other charges have been left to lie on the file.

A provisional date for the retrial was set for June 10 next year.

During her original trial, the court heard how "cold, cruel and relentless" Letby deliberately harmed babies in several ways, including injecting air into the bloodstream, injecting air into the stomach, overfeeding with milk, physical assaults and poisoning with insulin.

Mr Justice Goss addressed Letby as he passed her sentence, stating: "You acted in a way that was completely contrary to the normal human instincts of nurturing and caring for babies and in gross breach of the trust that all citizens place in those who work in the medical and caring professions.

"The babies you harmed were born prematurely and some were at risk of not surviving but in each case you deliberately harmed them, intending to kill them."

He went on: "There was premeditation, calculation and cunning in your actions."
