<\/p>\nRandy spiders are \u201cflying\u201d into our homes through open windows in search of a female.<\/p>\n
Experts told this week how a billion arachnids were heading into properties across the nation for mating season.<\/p>\n
And now one has warned that the critters can \u201cfly\u201d, or parachute through the air, so even people in high rises aren\u2019t spared.<\/p>\n

Chris Davis, from Cleankill Pest Control, said: \u201cIt is incredibly hard if not impossible to stop spiders from coming into your home. At this time of year, male spiders are in search of females, so are making their way into peoples\u2019 homes to find a mate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat most people don\u2019t know is that spiders can \u2018fly\u2019. They can easily get to around 40ft high by \u2018ballooning\u2019, so even people in tower blocks aren\u2019t immune.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although spiders don\u2019t actually \u2018fly\u2019 in the traditional sense, they can travel huge distances by \u2018parachuting\u2019 in the air.<\/p>\n

The phenomenon, called \u2018ballooning\u2019 or \u2018kiting\u2019, is when a spider launches itself from somewhere a few feet off the ground – like a wall, shed or tree – and takes to the air.<\/p>\n
As they \u2018fly\u2019 they fire out silken threads – normally used to make webs – which catch wind thermals, allowing the spiders to float through the air – and into our homes through open windows.<\/p>\n
Airborne spiders can travel from anywhere from a few feet to hundreds of miles, depending on the wind and air currents.<\/p>\n
Chris added that \u2018ballooning\u2019 spiders were often caught in suction traps placed \u2018high up\u2019.<\/p>\n

They are used to catch aphids to measure the number of pests in a particular area – proving that they are \u2018regular flyers\u2019.<\/p>\n
Arachnophobe Lily Saunders, 31, of Ely, Cambs, said she was \u2018horrified\u2019 that spiders could fly into her sixth-storey flat.<\/p>\n
The dance teacher said: \u201cIt\u2019s bad enough having to worry about spiders coming up through the sinkhole or cracks in the walls, but I really, really don\u2019t like it that they can fly into my flat.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019d asked me what my worst nightmare was last week I would have said \u2018flying spiders\u2019 – and now my nightmare turns out to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n
