Armed police have been called to a pack of vicious dogs that are "roaming" around and mauling various members of the public.

Police were confirmed to have been scrambled to Winson Green, Birmingham, earlier today after dogs were spotted "attacking at random" while "roaming" parts of the inner city.

A number of people, including a child, are said to have been injured in a horrific slate of dog attacks.

Some have been rushed to hospital after receiving injuries, with one man taking to social media to report the "two large dogs" that were said to have been wandering the area.

Those two dogs were said to be roaming the section of Dudley Road earlier in the day.

West Midlands Police have so far said six people were injured by two dogs in a slate of attacks which have hit part of Winson Green, which has now been sealed off pending police presence.

One resident who is said to have seen the vicious dogs recalled them as "big and grey" in a statement given to BirminghamLive.

She said: "As soon as I heard, I went. It’s upsetting."

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Our carers were turned away around 4pm. They said there were police here with firearms."

A statement from West Midlands Police read: "An elderly man was taken to hospital with bite injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

"Five other people have been presented at hospital with bite injuries which are also not believed to be life-threatening. We have seized two dogs and both have been taken to secure kennels."

A 28-year-old man has since been arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of possessing a dog which was dangerously out of control.

West Midlands Police added: "A police investigation is currently underway in Willow Gardens, in Winson Green, this evening. Police have blocked off access to back gardens to homes off one of the walkways.

"We have seized two dogs and both have been taken to secure kennels. We are investigating the incident and appeal for anyone with any information to contact us via Live Chat on our website or by calling 101 quoting log number 2743 of April 18."
