Vicious dog shot dead after attacking 17 people as young as four in wild rampage

A dog has been shot after it went on a wild rampage and attacked 17 people.

Police in Zambia have confirmed they terminated the hound in the Mtendere Compound in the nation’s capital Lusaka.

Residents in the area were warned on Friday (March 10) that the stray was on the loose and attacking people.

The canine was found and put down with a bullet at around 8.30am the following day.

Graphic images of the mutt were attached with local reports, showing the dog with a gunshot wound to its chest.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale said in a statement released on Saturday (March 11) that people ranging between four and 40 had all been attacked by it.

He said: “The dog was gunned down today around 08:30 hours in PHI area near Mtendere compound.

“Police in Mtendere compound received a report of dog bite in which 17 people have reported [to have] been bitten by a stray dog.

“The victims aged between 4 and 40 reported at different occasions on March.”

Police had been hunting for the dog since March 9 with victims reporting being attacked by a black dog.

The news comes weeks after Zambia was left mourning the loss of one of its former international football players, Philemon Mulala, after he was attacked and killed by his own dogs.

The 60-year-old is understood to have been mauled to death in Lichtenburg, South Africa, at around 3pm on Saturday, January 7.

He was discovered by his wife and later declared dead at the scene.

Police spokesperson Captain Sam Tselanyane said in a statement: "She did not bother to go and check what was wrong [when the dogs were barking] as their house is situated on a busy street and the dogs frequently barked at pedestrians and vehicles passing by.”

When his wife did eventually return inside she was unable to find Mulala.

Tselanyane continued: "Upon continuing with her search, the woman saw her husband lying motionless outside in the garden. She then went outside, only to find that the husband was bitten by their dogs."
