True gent tragically dies from tripping over doorstep after boozy celebrations

The death of a 31-year-old man who had been out drinking in various pubs with family and friends has been ruled to be a “simple accident” by a coroner.

Alex Murray had been celebrating getting a new job on October 1 2022, which he was due to start two days later.

But tragedy struck and he was found unresponsive outside the backdoor of his Blackburn home with his head on a step, Lancs Live reports.

Earlier this week, an inquest at Blackburn Town Hall ruled that there was no evidence of third party involvement.

Sergeant Christ Birchall of Lancashire Constabulary said: “Alex was found lying on the floor with his head on a small step.

“He was about six feet away from the side door. It wasn't possible to say exactly what happened but potentially it was a fall.”

And assistant coroner Sian Jones returned a conclusion of accidental death.

She said: “I am satisfied he had been drinking and had taken some cocaine but neither of those were likely to be the direct cause of his death.

“However the alcohol did affect his mobility and stability and it's likely to have caused or contributed to his fall because it would have increased the risk of him having a fall. I am satisfied that what he suffered was a simple accident.”

He sister Vanessa set up a GoFundMe page to cover the costs of his funeral, with family and friends paying tribute.

One friend wrote: “The loss of Alex's life is so devastating for so many people. He truly was loved.

“I hope that knowing how much he was loved will bring some comfort to his family and friends. Rest in peace Alex, you will be sadly missed.”

And another said: “So sadly missed brother, top lad. I hope this small gesture helps the family in any way.

“We are thinking of you all at this very sad time."
