A Blackpool hotelier was left in a pool of blood following an "extremely disturbing" alleged attack. A video of the incident was shared on social media.
Dennis Grainger, 45, was beaten on Wednesday (August 31) morning when alone on Blackpool Promenade. A bag on his back was stolen.
After reviewing the footage, a senior police officer described it as one of the most horrific assaults she'd seen in 29 years of policing, adding that Dennis was lucky to survive, reports LancsLive.
Dennis was taken to hospital after suffering broken bones as well as serious cuts and bruises, according to police.
A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with robbery following the incident.
He appeared before Blackpool Magistrates' Court on Thursday (September 1) and is next due to appear at Blackpool Youth Court on September 15.
A girl of the same age, who is believed to have filmed the incident, was later arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to rob.
The attack took place near to the RNLI lifeboat station on Blackpool Promenade. In the video, a male is seen in a cap and shorts as he approaches the victim while he sits on a step smoking a cigarette.
Dennis has thanked people who reached out to him on social media.
Speaking about the incident, Det Supt Becky Smith said: "The level of violence displayed by this suspect against a completely defenceless man who is sat down minding his own business is quite frankly extremely disturbing and inexcusable."
