Teacher ‘romped with student’ who is related to local police station worker

A married female teacher has been accused of having sex with a teenage student who is related to a local police station worker.

Authorities were called in when the alleged relationship was reported in Alabama, US, in January.

Local news station WAAY13 reports Ashton Alana McCluskey worked as a teacher at the popular Brooks High School.

The seventh-grade maths teacher and former cheerleader has since been freed from custody on bond on Wednesday.

She presently faces two counts of school employee engaging in a sex act with a student.

The news station said she was released from the Lauderdale County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.

She has been indicted by a grand jury for allegedly starting a sexual relationship with the student under the age of 17.

This stems from a State Bureau of Investigations probe into the allegations.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton previously told WAAY 31 the case was referred to the State Bureau of Investigation because the student involved is a family member of an employee with the sheriff's office.

Education chiefs said in a statement to the station: “The Lauderdale County School System cannot comment on matters involving an ongoing investigation.

"The system also cannot comment on personnel matters involving specific employees. Because this is a legal investigation, any questions should be directed to the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office.”

Police said McCluskey has taught 7th grade math at Brooks for the past three years.

She is also affiliated with the private cheer coaching endeavour Champion Cheer Athletics, having been on the cheer team at the University of Alabama where she received her teaching degree in 2017.

It is reported she has been married for three years.

If convicted of sexual contact with a student, McCluskey faces a permanent state ban on her teaching license, as well as possible prison time.
