On-the-run lag charged with murder of prison guard who helped him escape jail

An on-the-run lag who escaped jail with the assistance of his prison guard-turned-lover has been charged with her murder.

Vicky White helped Casey White escape Lauderdale County Jail in Alabama and despite initial reports suggesting the the guard shot herself, Casey is now being implicated in her death.

White was jailed following a crime spree in 2015 and at some point developed a relationship with his namesake, to whom he is not related, and she eventually helped him break out.

Vicky had informed her colleagues that she was escorting White to a mental health evaluation at the courthouse. However, no such appointment existed.

She abandoned the police squad car she was driving and fled with White.

The couple had been on the run from the cops for 11 days when they were finally captured by officers in Indiana on May 9.

White crashed the vehicle he was driving while being pursued by the police and Vicky died after she shot herself in the head.

Despite this fact, White caused Vicky's death, according to AL.com.

It is not yet known if the murder charge for White means prosecutors have changed their account of how Vicky was killed, the New York Post reported.

The indictment charges White with first-degree escape. It says that "in the course and furtherance of committing escape in the first degree".

White's lawyer Mark McDaniel said his client will plead not guilty to the charges and that his defence team will file a motion for the state to provide them with a copy of Vicky's post-mortem examination report.

He is charged with capital murder and is expected to go on trial at the end of this year.

White's ex-lawyer Dale Bryant has said the convict "suffers from a mental illness" and described him as "a decent person" when he is on medication in a supervised environment. But he said that outside of prison White was unable to stay on his medication and " even self-medicates by smoking methamphetamine or taking other illegal substances".

Prior to the jailbreak, Vicky filed her retirement papers and sold her home.
