Lottery winner almost misses £120k windfall after forgetting he bought ticket

A music teacher almost let a massive £120K lottery win slip away in a wild moment of absent-mindedness.

Vasilis Simmons from Virginia Beach, Virginia State, US, almost missed out on the mammoth sum after forgetting he’d bought the ticket.

The private music instructor picked up the Powerball ticket at the 7-Eleven at 425 Kings Grant Road for the draw on Saturday, April 8 – and proceeded to forget he’d done it.

Then, a week later, the ticket floated out of his pocket – checking the number he found they all matched: 11, 22, 25,51, and 60, plus Powerball number 18.

This earned him a whopping $50,000 (£39,600) – brilliant but not the whole sum.

It really was Vasilis’ day though, because he had also spent an extra dollar to get “Power Play” on the card meaning his win was tripled.

He headed down to the lottery headquarters in Richmond on Tuesday (April 18) where he explained what he planned to do with his newfound wealth – paying off the bills and then squirrelling the rest away to be saved.

Virginia Lottery officials said in a statement: "Powerball drawings are held at 10.59pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

"The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

"The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.

"All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia.

"Mr Simmons lives in Virginia Beach, which received more than $37.3 million (£29.5 million) in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.

"In Fiscal Year 2022, the Lottery raised more than $779 million (£617 million) for K-12 education, making up approximately 10% of Virginia's total K-12 school budget."
