Kamala Harris has been branded “completely pathetic” following her latest interview blunder. Ms Harris was discussing her administration’s efforts to deal with illegal immigration when she blamed Donald Trump’s stint in the White House for the current problems at the US-Mexico border.
Crossings over the US-Mexico border has been a contentious issue in American politics for some time – all the more so following its dominance in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election.
Former President Donald Trump is perhaps best known, in terms of policy, for his border wall, over which he was at the time branded racist.
Joe Biden’s administration has continued the work that Mr Trump’s began, despite him having once insisting there would “not be another foot of wall constructed” on his watch.
Appearing on NBC last night, Ms Harris was questioned on the effectiveness of the border.
She told interviewer Chuck Todd: “The border is secure.”
Ms Harris conceded there were some problems – claiming “we also have a broken immigration system, in particular over the last four years before we came in and it needs to be fixed” – but on the whole argued her Government’s methods were working.
Mr Todd quickly responded: “We’re going to have two million cross this border for the first time ever.
“You’re confident that this border’s secure?”

Ms Harris stumbled a little before continuing to blame Mr Trump for current crossing levels.
She said: “We have a secure border in that that is a priority for any nation, including ours and our administration.
“But there are still a lot of problems that we are trying to fix given the deterioration that happened over the last four years.”

The Vice President has been roundly mocked for declaring the border a “success” despite illegal crossings reaching a record high.
Foreign policy analyst Nile Gardiner responded in a post on Twitter: “This is just completely pathetic from Kamala Harris.
“Hard to take anything this left-wing administration says seriously.”
New York State Assemblyman Mike Lawler added: “This is absolutely embarrassing. We have a humanitarian and drug crisis at the border.
“It is not secure.”
Talk is now rather quickly turning to America’s next presidential election in 2024, which numerous commentators believe could fall out of the Democrat Party’s hands.
