Instagram pic appears to show the Queen handling a gun as users flock to comment

Social media users have questioned why the Queen appears to be holding a gun in her hand in an official Royal Family photo.

The photo of her Maj was uploaded onto the Royal Family’s Instagram account earlier this month.

In the snap, the Queen could be seen holding a medal box while looking over a document with Professor Mark Compton, Lord Prior of the order of St John.

Alongside the photo, the Royal Family posted: “Earlier this week, Her Majesty The Queen received the Order of St John’s first-ever Service Medal in Gold during an audience Professor Mark Compton, Lord Prior of the Order of St John.”

It continued: “The Queen is Sovereign Head of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.”

But, while many heaped praise of the Queen’s sense of style – most notably her bold colour-blocked dress – others questioned what she was holding in her hand.

Writer James Wharton quizzed why Her Maj appeared to be holding a firearm.

He added: “Why is the Queen holding a gun in this picture?”

Others were also puzzled by the photo, with Instagram users claiming the medal box looked like a pistol or a revolver.

The answer is fairly obvious, however, as the medal box only looks like a firearm due to the angle of the photo.

But nestled among those comments were many who called on the Queen to stop carrying out royal duties until the end of the coronavirus crisis.

One Instagram user said: “She is too valuable to lose to this virus.”

The outbreak has even thrown into question whether the country will be able to celebrate the Queen’s birthday in June over fears of the virus.

This year, the traditional summer spectacle could be axed for the first time in decades, as it coincides with the peak of the deadly coronavirus.
