‘I was taken at birth and raised by kidnapper – both dads walked me down aisle’

A woman who was kidnapped at birth and raised by her abductors saw her two "families" come together at her wedding.

Miche Zephany Sheldon was taken as a baby by Lavona Solomon and raised by her and her husband Michael for 19 years.

Despite her mum's crime, the 26-year-old from Cape Town, South Africa, said her kidnappers brought her up in a happy home and she considers Michael her father.

Now he and Miche's biological dad, Morne Nurse, have walked her down the aisle together as she tied the knot with husband Justin Sheldon, 32.

"Michael had been my dad my whole life – he fathered me," she said. "I'm so glad Morne opened his heart to walk alongside him down the aisle.

"It was such a beautiful day. We saw the unionship [sic] of my two families."

Miche, whose original name was Zephany Nurse, was born on April 27, 1997.

Three days later she was snatched from her cot in Groote Schur Hospital, Cape Town, and raised by Lavona and Michael.

Miche had no idea she had been born to a different family until a new girl named Cassidy joined her class and the pair realised they looked exactly alike.

Social workers at Miche's school encouraged her to do a DNA test – which found Cassidy was her biological sister.

Lavona was arrested shortly afterwards.

She is now nearing the end of a 10-year sentence at Worcester Female Prison in connection with the crime and is due to be freed on August 18.

Miche was introduced to her birth parents on February 25, 2015, at the age of 17.

However, she said she struggled with the news and didn't feel an immediate bond with her biological family.

"It was extremely difficult, because you've grown up thinking this is your family," she said. "Meeting my biological parents there wasn't that connection.

"I was looking for it – but it just wasn't there in the beginning. I'd been raised by Lavona and Michael my whole life.

"Both families were just so harsh with each other, as well. I really had to adjust to having two different dads in my life.

"But I knew I'd want them both walking me down the aisle whenever I got married."

Miche no longer has any contact with Lavona, who was having fertility issues and had recently suffered a late miscarriage when she swiped Miche from her crib while disguised as a nurse.

However, the bookkeeper doesn't see the woman who raised her as a crook.

"I don't see the mum who raised me as criminal and evil. Everyone just got hurt in the process," she said.

"We all just needed to heal."

Miche and Justin tied the knot on March 21, 2023, and now have a family with Miche's two children from a previous relationship – Sophia, six and Matteo, four.

She continued: "My biological dad wasn't too happy at first. But this day was all about me and my relationship with my husband.

"But eventually, he said yes for me. It was a miracle!

"The relationship between my two families is improving. They do get along now – we've all matured, realised we're human and are finally coming to terms with what happened.

"We show mutual respect to one another, and we're all very understanding."
