A huge blaze has taken place in Durham city centre with fire crews currently on the scene.
The fire, which was earlier believed to have been an explosion, is on the building site of the Milburngate development.
Eight fire crews from from Durham, Spennymoor, High Handenhold and Newton Aycliffe are now on the scene following an initial five crews that were called to the scene just after 2pm.
Local reports suggest the smoke is getting thicker thicker around the building site with smoke seen drifting across the city.
Traffic is also building up in the area with photos showing cars at a standstill.
County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service are now asking people to avoid travelling into the city centre while fire crews work handle the situation.
The fire service tweeted: "8 crews are at the scene of a fire at the Milburngate development. We would like to confirm there are no reports of an explosion & we are dealing with large fire in the construction site. Please avoid the area & find an alternative route home."
The full circumstances of the incident are not yet known.
Durham Constabulary has been contacted and we are waiting for further information.
