‘Harry & Meghan’ director claims Palace Tried to ‘discredit’ their Netflix doc

The director of the Harry & Meghan Netflix documentary is accusing Buckingham Palace of trying to "discredit" the series.

Liz Garbus, the Oscar-nominated director of the docu-series, discussed the creation of the global hit that detailed the genesis of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship and their journey to this day.

The series chronicled the troubles the couple faced within the Royal Family that ultimately to led them stepping down from royal duties in 2020.

Garbus said creating the series gave her insight into the "alleged palace mind games" that the pair had to experience.

She said: "For instance, Buckingham Palace said that we didn't reach out for comment [on the docuseries] when we did.

"They did that to discredit us…and by discrediting us, they can discredit the content of the show."

She added: "We lived through some of those moments that were a little bit like Alice Through the Looking Glass."

While at the start of the series, which aired in December, began with a title card stating: "Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within the series.

Following the end of the first episode, a palace source told People that neither members of the Royal Family, Buckingham Palace or Prince William's office at Kensington Palace were approached for comments regarding the series.

Despite the claim from a Palace source, a Netflix source then told People that communications offices for King Charles and Prince William were in fact contacted in advance and were given the right to reply to claims that were made in the series.

Following its long-awaited premiere, Harry & Meghan was hugely successful as it had become Netflix's biggest documentary debut week in the history of the streaming service.

The Daily Star has approached Buckingham Palace for comment.
