A daredevil hamster that broke into Poundland on a freezing cold night to get some New Year’s Eve pick’n’mix has been scooped up by the Scottish SPCA.
The animal welfare charity has launched a search for the plucky rodent's owner and in the meantime staff at the shelter have nicknamed the fearless fur-ball Tom Cruise in honour of his Mission Impossible style stunt.
It’s not yet known how far the determined little fellow had come for his pick’n’mix fix but New Year’s Eve was a chilly day in Glasgow with temperatures falling as low as -2ºC overnight.
CCTV from inside the Poundland store on Glasgow’s famous Sauchiehall Street shows the hamster hitching a ride on an unsuspecting customer until they got close enough to make a high-speed dash to the pick’n’mix counter.
Animal rescue officer Amy Stirton was sent to put an end to the hamster’s heist and she collected him from Poundland and took him to an animal rescue and rehoming centre where he is being cared for until his true owner can be tracked down.
Amy said: “This hamster is in good health and we are keen to reunite him with his owner. We’ve named the little adrenaline junkie Tom Cruise for now, given his Mission Impossible-esque attempt to get some treats from Poundland.”
She added: “Given how unusual this year has been, it feels appropriate to round off 2020 with such a bizarre job!”
The SPCA have asked for anyone who thinks they know “Tom Cruise’s” owner to call the charity’s animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
