George, Charlotte and Louis school accepted £2.2m from Putins childhood pal

The school attended by the children of Prince William and Kate Middleton had a swimming pool built using a huge donation from one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest friends.

Lambrook School in Berkshire has been the educational home of all three of the royal couple's children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

And it has now emerged that a £2.2million donation from Russian oligarch Arkrady Rotenberg helped to fund the new pool complex – despite the school charging £21,000 per year per student.

The bloke is thought to be worth around £2.9billion and has been hit by sanctions from the UK Government in the last year or so.

The 71-year-old has been friends with Putin since the despotic leader was just 11-years-old.

The swimming pool project began in 2011 – around 11 years before sanctions were placed on him.

A school spokesman told MailOnline: “Lambrook School has always, and will always, fully comply with all appropriate legislation and undertakes strict due diligence for any charitable donation.

“We do not comment on individual donations or donors.

“The Swimming Pool project began in 2011, and any donations towards this project were received at this time.”

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the school's behalf.

The money was donated around a decade before the trio of royals attended the school as they only joined last year when the family moved to Windsor to live in Adelaide Cottage.

The billionaire's wife had previously told The Sun that they did support the school and the project.

Natalia, now his ex-wife, said: “We were happy to support this school and give children the new opportunity for swimming.”

It is not known whether the children have actually used the swimming pool yet.

Rotenberg was born in Leningrad, and was part of the same sambo club as Putin.

The pair joined around a year after first becoming pals.

He has several medals given to him by Putin, including the Order of Friendship, the Hero of Labour of the Russian Federation, and the Order of Honour.
