Football player stabbed mid-match after pitch stormed by a machete-wielding gang

A footballer was stabbed after a machete-wielding gang stormed the pitch in the middle of a match.

The victim, who is believed to be in his 20’s, was playing at Gainsborough Sports Centre in Braziers Wood Road, Ipswich.

At around 4 pm on August 6, a gang ran onto the field and attacked him.

The player suffered wounds to his arm and his hip before the gang fled the scene on foot.

The victim was taken to the hospital where his wounds were treated. He has since been discharged.

Today (August 7) Suffolk Constabulary confirmed that they have arrested two teenagers in connection with the assault.

In a statement, they said: “Shortly before 6 pm, yesterday police arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm.

“A short time later, at approximately 8 pm, a 15-year-old boy was also arrested.

“Both boys have been taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre where they will be questioned by detectives.”

Police also stated the victim and his attackers knew each other.

According to ITV, Suffolk Football Association said in a statement: "We are aware a very serious incident took place at a football match in Ipswich this afternoon.

"We are working with the relevant authorities to fully understand what happened, and supporting those involved. No further comment will be made at this stage."

Assington Stanley FC, who were playing against Kesgrave Kestrals, at the time also issued a statement wishing the victim a full recovery.

Witnesses or anyone with any information relating to the incident are asked by Suffolk Constabulary to contact CID in Ipswich quoting reference 37/50294/22.
