Elon Musk spoke directly to Putin before tweeting about Ukraine peace plan

Elon Musk has taken to Twitter as he denied a report that had claimed he'd spoken to Vladimir Putin directly.

A report written by Ian Bremmer was cited on the social media app as the user asked whether it was true, to which Musk replied: “No, it is not".

"I have spoken to Putin only once and that was about 18 months ago. The subject matter was space.”

Despite Musk shutting down Bremmer's claim, the latter doubled down on his initial claim that the Tesla CEO and the Russian president directly conversed.

Bremmer wrote: “Elon Musk told me he had spoken with Putin and the Kremlin directly about Ukraine. He also told me what the Kremlin’s red lines were."

Bremmer's weekly newsletter about geopolitics, which he's been writing for 24 years, was where he made the initial claim and said he did so “honestly without fear or favour and this week’s update was no different.”

He added: “I’ve long admired Musk as a unique and world-changing entrepreneur, which I've said publicly. He's not a geopolitics expert.”

Musk had tweeted out a 'peace proposal' regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine, with Bremmer claiming Musk spoke directly with Putin before he tweeted out the proposal.

He wrote that Musk told him that Putin was “prepared to negotiate,” but only if Crimea remained a Russian territory, if Ukraine accepted a form of permanent neutrality, as well as Ukraine recognising Russia’s annexation of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

The proposal was publicly praised by Putin and Kremlin for Musk’s “positive” vision to end the war, while his tweets were also cited by Russian state media.

Despite receiving praise from Russia, Musk insisted that he remains pro-Ukraine and aims to avoid nuclear war.
