A bus carrying 40 school pupils plummeted down a wooded slope into a creek in the French Alps.

The bus driver and his partner were left with serious injuries requiring hospital treatment after the incident.

Meanwhile 18 children and one other adult were treated for minor injuries, mayor of the town of Corps said Fabien Mulyk, where the incident took place, said.

Four of the children were taken to hospital for a check-up by medical staff.

"They are all doing well," mayor Mulyk told the Associated Press.

The weather at the time of the accident was clear with no ice or snow on the path where the bus crashed, and all of the children were wearing their seat belts, officials told local media.

Mayor Mulyk said the "most probable scenario" was that the driver suffered a medical problem while driving, causing the disaster.

The crash is understood to have taken place along Route Napoléon, a treacherously steep road linking Grenoble to Gap known for its frequent fatal road accidents.

The regional prosecutor has opened an investigation in the hope of identifying the cause of the accident.

The horrifying encounter took place as the bus was taking the 40 children home from a summer camp in the mountainous region, popular with skiers, according to French media.

They were on their way to Grenoble station as part of a journey to the town of Sceaux, in Hauts-de-Seine, where they are from.

A snap shared online following the incident showed the bus leaning off the slope of a ravine.

The bus was caught in a tangle of dried branches and its windshield had been shattered during the accident.
