Border Patrol from the US has seized over 7,000lbs of fentanyl just this year, which is enough to kill the population of the United States five times over.

At an Oversight Committee on Tuesday (February 7), Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Agent John Modlin said in his area last year, 700 pounds of fentanyl, a class A drug, was seized which would be enough to kill half the population in the US.

Politician Tim Burchett of Tennessee revealed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) figures on the fentanyl seizures statistics so far in 2023.

He said: "And approximately 76 percent, or 7,200 pounds of that was seized coming through our southwest border."

He went on to reveal how many deaths the fentanyl seizure of over 7,000 would cause in the US and the answer is a staggering one.

"I'll do the math for you,' Burchett said. 'It's 1.6 billion people, with a 'b'.

"That's enough fentanyl to kill every American almost five times over," he insisted.

"And the bottom line is this country was on its way, I felt, to a secure border under President Trump,' the lawmaker said. 'But President Biden put an end to that on his first day in office. I believe Americans are dying as a result."

It only takes two milligrams of fentanyl to kill a person as in 2022, it was recorded as the highest number of fentanyl-related overdoses and death to date.

Gary Palmer, the US representative of Alabama, labelled fentanyl as a "weapon" making its way across the border and killing young people.

"Fentanyl is a weapon that is coming across our borders that's killing young people at a record level.

"The drug overdose death rate for people under age 24 is at an all-time-high, especially among the African American community," he noted.

Adding: "I have a real hard time understanding why we continue to operate the way that we operate."
