Heathrow Airport covered with ‘carpet of luggage’ amid chaotic technical blunder

Passengers at Heathrow Airport have spotted a 'carpet of luggage' in a closed terminal after chaos has ensued for travellers over the weekend.

In recent weeks dozens of flights have been cancelled, with reports of passengers being stranded and waiting up to six hours to be 'sent home'.

But last Friday (June 17) Heathrow, the UK's busiest airport also saw a major technical blunder that resulted in a huge collection of luggage piled up following an issue with the baggage system.

Passengers reported that the luggage belts were not working, which led to staff having to place all the suitcases together.

In the video, which has gained 19,700 likes on TikTok, the bags were seen being laid out in a closed-off terminal like 'a carpet' while staff members donning high vis jackets try to sort through it all.

The clip's captioning read: "An 'enormous luggage carpet' has been spotted outside of a terminal as staff grapple with 'an ongoing issue with the baggage system.'"

Industry experts have warned that worst of the travel disruption could be yet to come, with problems set to continue well into next year, according to MyLondon.

The disruption has also continued today (June 20), with around 30 flights and 5000 passengers will be affected.

A Heathrow spokesperson told Daily Star: "We apologise unreservedly for the disruption passengers have faced over the course of this weekend.

"The technical issues affecting baggage systems have led to us making the decision to request airlines operating in Terminals 2 and 3 to consolidate their schedules on Monday 20 June.

"This will enable us to minimise ongoing impact and we ask that all passengers check with their airlines for the latest information."

The news comes after a Scandinavian Airlines pilot has completely trash-talked Britain's biggest airport in a hilarious passengers' announcement.

The pilot, who had just landed in Heathrow, walked out of the cockpit into the cabin and grabbed the intercom phone to lay into the London airport, explaining to those onboard why Heathrow is so chaotic and why flights are so delayed.

He also joked about how big the yacht he is looking forward to spending time on in his retirement in six months after dealing with trying to land a plane in an overly occupied airport.
