June Date Likely For 2022 F1 Miami Grand Prix

By all indications, Formula 1 plans to keep the two U.S. races several months apart on the 2022 calendar.

The FIA and Formula 1 announced at Imola, Italy, that, despite the on-off saga of the proposed Miami Grand Prix over the past few years, Formula 1 will indeed head to Florida next year. And F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali added that Miami and the existing U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, will be kept separate on the race calendar.

“The date (for Miami) will be in the second quarter of next year,” Domenicali said at Imola. “We have always said that the United States is a key market in which we must develop our business. There are a lot of opportunities to be seized and having two races in the United States is the right direction for our strategy for the future.”

Currently, Austin is scheduled to host its 2021 race October 24, kicking off a subsequent trek to two other regional events in the Americas at Mexico and Brazil. Therefore, a summer date for Miami next year, paired with Canada, is likely. Canadian medial outlets Le Journal de Montreal has projected that the Miami race will take place in June, just after Montreal.

The 2021 F1 Canadian Grand Prix is set for June 13.

The addition of Miami to the F1 schedule is not expected to add to the overall number of race dates. F1 is racing 23 times in 2021 and plans to keep that same number of races in 2022.

Referring to Miami and Austin, Domenicali said, “We’ll keep them separate so that we have the right space for both of them. That’s really crucial.

“We are proud, and I mean as Formula 1, because after a difficult 2020 and with the challenges of 2021, we are looking to the future and laying the groundwork for an incredible future for Formula 1.”

Miami’s race is slated for the Hard Rock Stadium entertainment campus and will not use public roads for the race circuit.

Tickets for the 2021 U.S. Grand Prix at Austin go on sale on April 27, according to the event’s website.
